In Rebuttal: Why the War in Iran Will – and Must – Go On to Mission Completion

Iran’s Nihilist Culture and the Nuclear Threat No One Wants to Talk About

In his April 2nd Manila Times column (“Why I think the war will go on”), my friend Ben Kritz offers a familiar, one-sided lament from those on the American Left and International Anti-US Cabal: Israel is the insatiable aggressor pushing a “Greater Israel” from the Nile to the Euphrates, the new Knesset death-penalty bill is proof of ethnic cleansing, and the United States is being dragged in by AIPAC to finish the job against Iran. The Manila Palestinian embassy statement is quoted with approval – settlers are villains, and Iran is cast as the rational counterweight to the “Zionist” existential threat.

Pasensya na, pero mali lang ‘yan. Ben’s narrative is not only incomplete, but also dangerously inverted. The war grinds on not because Israel has become aggressively expansionist (a charge that conveniently ignores decades of rejected peace offers to the plethora of in-fighting Palestinian groups, the Hamas charter that codifies killing all Jews, and Hezbollah’s promise to “erase Israel from the face of the earth”), but because the Iranian regime’s apocalyptic ideology leaves no room for coexistence.

THIS IS THE BOTTOM LINE:  If the United States – the world’s de facto policeman – fails to decisively mitigate Tehran’s ability to produce nuclear-tipped long-range missiles, that same regime will not hesitate to launch them at Europe and the Gulf states.

    Iranians Shooting Missiles

The current Iranian leadership does not operate under the secular calculus of rational deterrence that Ben Kritz implicitly assumes. It is steeped in what can only be called a nihilist cult – a “Twelver Shia” eschatology that elevates the return of the Hidden Imam (Mahdi, aka. Islamic messiah) as its ultimate goal.

Hardliners in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the supreme leader’s inner circle believe the Mahdi’s arrival can be manually hastened by engineered chaos: global war, mass death, and destruction of the “oppressors.” This is not fringe theology, it is state doctrine. Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad openly prayed for the Mahdi’s return in the UN General Assembly.

IRGC commanders speak of “preparing the ground” for the Mahdi through confrontation with Israel and the West. In their worldview, mutual assured destruction is not a deterrent, it is an invitation. Martyrdom on a national scale is not tragedy, it is prophecy fulfilled.

That is why Iran’s ballistic-missile program and its sprint toward nuclear breakout matter far more than any Israeli settler violence or Knesset bill. Tehran already possesses missiles that can reach Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Eastern European capitals. Once those warheads go nuclear – and every intelligence assessment shows the regime is (well, was) mere months or weeks from that threshold – the nihilist Mahdi mindset removes any incentive for restraint.

THINK ABOUT IT:  A regime that sends orphaned teenagers to clear minefields with their bodies in the name of the Mahdi will not lose sleep over radioactive fallout across the Gulf or clouds of enriched uranium dust drifting toward the Mediterranean.

    Teenager Clearing Landmines

I spent a year in Beirut during the civil war as a young US Marine, speak Arabic semi-fluently, and have maintained significant contacts there until today, so yours truly knows a thing or two about middle eastern geopolitics. Ben writes about Palestinian detainees and Lebanese buffers. Those are real human tragedies, but they pale beside the strategic reality: without American (and Israeli) pressure to degrade Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, the next “security incident” will not be a border skirmish, it will be a mushroom cloud.

The Gulf monarchies know this. That is why they quietly coordinate with Israel and beg Washington not to abandon the field. Europe’s capitals know it too, even if their diplomats prefer quiet diplomacy and the sanctions theater. Only the United States retains the power projection needed to enforce the single red line that actually matters: Iran cannot be allowed to mate nuclear warheads to its long-range missiles.

Ben chastises the current U.S. administration as a “pliant moron” and suggests leaks about withdrawal are a mere smokescreen. Perhaps. But the deeper truth is simpler – any American president who walks away from this fight is not choosing peace; he is choosing Armageddon on someone else’s timeline. Greater Israel fantasies, however exaggerated, do not threaten Paris, Berlin, or Doha with instant incineration. Iranian nuclear eschatology does.

And, as for the nattering, America-hating nabobs in Manila like Bobi Tiglao and Maria Ressa screaming, “…damn, Trump, this is not our fight!!”, I would remind them to stop and think about the 2.4 MILLION OFW’s living and working across the Middle East, and how their lives would be affected if the mullahs were able to send drones with “dirty bomb” (let alone nuclear) warheads across the Strait of Hormuz.

The war will and must go on because the alternative – handing the planet’s only suicidal, dark world, anti-messiah regime the most destructive weapons of all time – is simply unthinkable. The United States did not choose this role. Geography, economics, and history chose it as the only power capable of acting as global enforcer. Pretending otherwise or reducing the conflict to Zionist villainy while airbrushing away Tehran’s death cult, is not moral clarity. It is strategic blindness.
